I’ve played field hockey since sixth grade. While I would not consider myself an athlete, over the eight years I’ve played it I fell in love with the sport. In highschool, my field hockey team provided me with a distraction from school work, a competitive workout, and a community to rely on. I was worried that I was going to lose that community when coming to Santa Clara. I was not a varsity level athlete, nor did I want to commit the majority of my time to...

One question I made sure to ask at every college visit was, “do you have an outdoors club?”. Now, don't get me wrong, I did not grow up backpacking a few times a month, or skiing every winter (that would have been awesome!) so by no means was I a pro. But, I was fortunate to spend 3 weeks backpacking and camping during one high school summer. This trip made me realize how powerful being outdoors is in resetting our mind, body, and spirit. There really is so...

During the summer of 2018, our beloved Benson Memorial Center dining hall (or just “Benson” to SCU students) underwent a major transformation. Beyond the cosmetic changes, Benson now has many improved and brand new food options, and is an awesome place for hanging out outside of mealtimes as well.

One of the most popular options in Benson is Stacks, the custom sandwich station where it feels like the world is truly your oyster. They offer several bread optio...

We have a role for everybody in the Theatre and Dance Department at Santa Clara. Every academic department at SCU has a photo of all of the students who are majoring or minoring in that department, but in Theatre and Dance we not only have photos of majors and minors but we also include photos of our “Enthusiasts”. Enthusiasts range from students who want to take the occasional class in the department to students who want to do everything but the major, the...

I played volleyball all four years of high school, and that’s how I met all of my friends that became my staple group my four years there.  Then my first year at Santa Clara I joined the D1 rowing team. Unfortunately, I am the clumsiest person I know and somehow managed to get a bulged disc half way through my first season.  So rowing was out. I needed some sort of team sport in my life, because sports had always had been present. Note that I am a person of...

Having gone to public school my entire life, I did not know what to expect attending a Jesuit institution -- ironic, considering that the Jesuit core value of educating the whole person is initially what attracted me to Santa Clara. But what does it mean to be a Jesuit school? Would I see strange men in black dotting the campus? Would I be pressured into adopting Catholic practices? What even was a Jesuit??

These questions were pushed aside in favor of the m...

The first photo I took at Santa Clara when I moved in. From my window! Check out that view.

When I first started applying to college, I knew that I wanted to explore schools outside of Georgia. I applied to 10 schools– 9 of which were out of state. When I started receiving my acceptance letters, I was so excited that I could make my dreams of going to school anywhere in the country a reality!

I decided to go to school in California for three reasons:

1) You ca...
